After a week of driving around, there is still a leak. I think I may order new gaskets and try it all again.

Scion FRS. I installed some aftermarket headers, so it sounds like it is coming somewhere headers and the exhaust ports on the block. I couldn't find any other leaks else where, so I have to assume that is it.

yeah makes sense. How did the quality of the headers look before install, flanges look nice and clean?

The flanges were the best I have ever seen. I think it may be the gasket. I bought some aftermarket ones(cause cheaper), I might go and grab some Subaru ones and see if it fixes the problem.

On subies I usually install them with some RTV as a bonus layer of protection. I only asked because I chased this crap on an Audi Allroad a client of mine had bought some cheap headers for and the flanges werent formed well.

I will go pick some of that up as well. I noticed a little soot on one of the flanges between the header and the rest of the exhaust. A tiny leak, but that is pretty common, still want it gone.

yeah that RTV works well for me. Good luck! I HATE exhaust leaks of any sort. Just makes your whip sound janky

If you don't apply the RTV well, isn't there a chance for some of it to get into the exhaust and then lay on the cat and destroy it?

I would imagine if you slathered it on heavy, like ridiculous heavy some could get into the cat. I just use a little on the gasket surface and there is really no danger.

Alright, well that is good to know! I would hate to get something wrong, and end up having to spend 2 to 300 dollars on a new catted pipe.

oh yeah I hear you man! I have used that trick on everything from Range Rovers to classic SAAB 900's. Never had an issue, just go light, you are only making up for very slight imperfections in the gasket or the mating surface, not filling holes!!!

Should I use it on both sides?

Yeah, I wish I could have started earlier, but my dad was never big on working on cars. Hopefully in a few years I can buy a nice project car and start learning for real!
